A few days ago, Mr. Joe Biden bashed Facebook, saying platforms like Facebook are killing people. But after a day or two, Mr. Biden takes a quick u-turn from his statements saying Facebook isn’t killing people. Well, It escalated quickly though!
Biden made his remarks after a meeting held in the White House battling this global pandemic. The misinformation spreading through social platforms is enormous. This not only sticks to the virus itself but is also, the only available solution to prevent further damage i.e Covid 19 Vaccines.
The comments were harsh from the US president but they needed to be spoken by him as the White House is in deep talks to tackle this global pandemic. And with this misinformation about vaccines, people are in extreme doubts whether to get vaccinate themselves or not.
On July 17, 2021, A reporter from The Hill asked Mr. President, ” What’s your message to platforms like Facebook?” to which Mr. President replied, “They are killing people!”
Facebook, the platform recently became a $1 Trillion company, has a huge number of users. in fact, it’s the biggest social platform ever. So, with that huge amount of users, misinformation can be spread easily to target a majority of people. Biden words are accurate, you don’t know how individuals will interpret that false information in their minds.
Facebook has millions of users across the globe. Anyone can post, view, or share anything regarding anything! Yet we have seen a lot of conspiracy stuff like the Covid-19 virus is self-created in labs. Vaccines have no effect in creating immunity and many more about its side effects. On another hand, people are suffering from different mental disorders due to misinformation about this global pandemic.
This misinformation or false information has also caused panic attacks and anxiety towards millions of users. Psychological disorders are increasing day by day. Facebook really needs to monitor what an individual is posting and whether it’s true or untrue, especially in medical issues.
Facebook said it’s taken down more than 18 million pieces of COVID-19 misinformation.
On Monday, as Biden softened his remarks against Facebook, he still pressed the company to do more to combat vaccine misinformation.
“My hope is that Facebook, instead of taking it personally, that somehow I’m saying Facebook is killing people, that they would do something about the misinformation, the outrageous misinformation about the vaccine.”Joe Biden – US President
Meanwhile, Facebook did a little to tackle spreading false information. A few days ago, Facebook created a new feature named “Expert Feature”. It is designed to help real experts “stand out” in discussions about their field of expertise. It will enable effective communication between users discussing a particular topic especially health-related issues.
