Using An Old iOS Device Download This Update Now!

Apple’s released iOS 12.5.4 for iPhones and iPads that don’t support iOS 13 or later versions.

If you’re an iOS user and your iOS version is 12.5 you need to download this security update as soon as possible to secure your privacy in this cybercrime era.

According to Apple’s release notes, the security fix addresses two WebKit vulnerabilities and one “maliciously created certificate,” all of which might lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple also claims that the two WebKit flaws may have been actively exploited, so anybody using an earlier device should get the update. iOS 14.6 also included a fix for the certificate flaw.

This is something big for old users who love to use the vintage iPhone and iPad designs that are about to fade in upcoming years. Usually, we don’t see updates from tech companies. The time period for software update is commonly 2-3 years just, not more than that. And since it’s a security update, users will get more secure ways to protect their security.

Statistic explains the majority of iOS devices used are iPhone 6 models. As reported by MensXp, The most successful smartphone for Apple is still the iPhone 6/6s series to this day with the smartphone recording a sale of 222.4 million units. In fact, the phone still manages to sell in India today as one can grab a new one for about Rs 15,000.

The phone was first launched in 2014 where it featured a 4.7-inch LCD screen, a fingerprint scanner, and up to 128GB of internal storage. The phone was available in three colors i.e. gold, silver, and Space Gray.

According to DeviceAtlas, at least 5.3% of iPhone users in 2020 had an iPhone 6, 1.55% had an iPhone 5S, and 1.42% had an iPhone 6 Plus. In total, that’s nearly 8.3% of all iPhone users. (If you’re curious, DeviceAtlas says the most popular iPhone by usage is the iPhone 7 globally, and the iPhone XR in the U.S.)

To get iOS 12.5.4, you can go to Settings, General, and then select Software Update. The devices impacted are the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and the 6th generation iPod touch.

Software updates are dead to devices within 2-3 years because of aging hardware. Looks like Apple data analysts have analyzed this well according to the statistics. Apple devices are expensive as hell that makes it impossible for everyone to update time after time. So, it’s nice to see Apple continue to provide these updates for users who may be unable to upgrade.
