Google Pixel Fold - A new foldable smartphone is on its way!

The Google Pixel Fold smartphone had already been scrapped before it was ever unveiled, new evidence suggests that the foldable device is still in the works.

The latest evidence discovered of Google’s Pixel foldable reveals a device that looks more like the Oppo Find N than the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

We’ve been following the progress of Google’s first foldable Pixel phone for almost a year. During that period, it has gone under two different internal code names: “Passport” and, more recently, a bird-themed code name, “Pipit.” While the ultimate name is unknown. Anyway! Let’s call it Google Pixel Fold for now.

Previously, 9to5Google revealed that the Pixel Fold’s camera may be inferior to that of the Pixel 6. The Pixel Fold will also use the same Google Tensor (GS101) processor as the Pixel 6 series.

Late last year, reports emerged that Google was cancelling part orders for the Pixel Fold, implying that the device will not be released. However, we now have grounds to believe that progress has been made.

In Android 12L Beta 2, released this afternoon, discovered new animations that depict how to insert a SIM card into a foldable phone. They appear similar to the animations used when setting up a Pixel today, during the stage where the phone asks for a SIM card or eSIM. More importantly, the code for this animation makes reference to the Pixel Fold’s “Pipit” code name.

The latest Android 12L Beta 2 has animations that portray a Google-branded foldable smartphone in diagram form, as reported by 9to5Google.

The videos then proceed to illustrate the foldable smartphone’s SIM card insertion process, which is comparable to prior non-folding Pixel device animations.

Many had assumed that Google’s Pixel Fold would be similar in size and form to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, with a 22.5:18 aspect ratio. Instead, these animations depict a Pixel Fold that looks a lot like the Oppo Find N foldable, which has a nearly square 8.4:9 aspect ratio.

We think the depicted device’s interior screen has a 7:8 ratio based on some thorough measurements. The Pixel Fold was rumored to have a 7.6″ inner display, in compared to the Oppo Find N, which has a 7.1″ inner display.

The Google Pixel Fold’s specifications, pricing, and release date are still to be announced. Let’s see what Google has in planned for this future phone.
