Tips for Personal Cybersecurity
Here are a few cybersecurity tips to save your personal information. Take cybersecurity measures to save your data from misuse.
1. Update your System Regularly
I don’t know why but most of us always keep ignoring notifications about updating our devices. Well, knowing why updating the system is important may change our habits. Updates not only give a new look to your device but also repair security flaws in your system. Security flaws or software vulnerabilities are loved by hackers the most. It is a security weakness in your personal computer or system.
What if you don’t repair flaws in your system? You give a chance to hackers to inject malicious files into your personal computers. You can transfer it to the others. You can be a victim and a criminal at the same time. Please update the system. Software updates have security patches. This repairs your security holes and keeps hackers out of the game.
2. Use Public Wi-Fi Safely
We connect to the public wi-fi without taking any measures. Hackers could take advantage of this to gain access to your data. But why using public wi-fi is not safe? The biggest threat is a public wi-fi server can easily be hacked. Hackers put themselves in between you and the connection point. It can give them easy access to all the data you are sharing using this connection. Hackers plant infected software on files you are sharing across the network. Thus, distribute malware. Do not make a mind not to use public wi-fi but take a few precautions. Stick to one network you know. Make it secure using a VPN. Avoid sharing important files over these networks.
People are sharing every step on social media. They are telling if they are going for meetings or shopping. We all love to share our photos and tag our friends. We provide the bulk of the information on our social media accounts (just have a look at your Facebook account). While browsing the internet, we leave traces. It makes it easier for wrong intended persons to get into every aspect of our lives.
While posting anything, just remember nothing is private on social media. Something can go viral and people can use it as they want. Go to privacy settings, and make your post only visible to your friends. Do not accept requests from unknown persons. Usually, it’s a downer (not technically but morally).
4. Enable Two-factor Authentication (2-FA)
One of the best ways to secure your accounts is two-factor authentication. Maybe your password is easy to guess but two-step verification requires more to log in to your account on a new device. It needs your password and also a code sent to your device. It is a supplement to your strong passwords. Adding in as another security layer, 2-factor authentication requires the hackers to break two layers while hacking your account. Much more difficult than usual!
You can get your 2-F code in two ways. First is to get it on a phone call, message or mail. Another one is to create a passcode offline on your hardware devices. The second one is more acceptable as it requires no network. In some cases, the second method may involve some biometric verification making it more reliable. Not all but many social media platforms are today offering 2-FA options. Just enable it.
5. Don’t Use the Same Password Everywhere
When it comes to passwords. People are too lazy to create a new password for their account on any social media site. It may make passwords easy to remember but increases the chance of getting hacked all your accounts. Just imagine one of your social media accounts got hacked and you were using the same password for your bank account. Results can be worse! Try to create a new password for every account. All passwords do not have the same importance. You may have the same password for all your lot devices. But some other passwords are really important; like your bank account passwords and e-mail account password. It is necessary that our passwords be unique and strong. You can use password management tools to manage your passwords.
6. Be Careful When Sharing Personal Information
You may receive calls from unknown numbers to share your bank account details. This is the easiest way for hackers to get all your sensitive information just in seconds. Other methods may include instant messaging or other social media platforms. The caller may ask you about your address, credit card information, family members’ names, or other personal information. Never share information with these mystery callers.
But the question is what are they gonna do with this information!? They may use your identity for their benefit, which is regarded as identity theft. Or this information can be used to have access to your belongings. To avoid these undesirable conditions, always check with whom you are sharing information.
Personal cybersecurity is critical to use the internet without any worry. You can save yourself from damage only if you’re well aware of it. Try to get updated knowledge about the cybersecurity measures of the platforms you are using. Protect your data using the latest and updated tools. There is no need to hire professionals to secure your accounts. Just a brief knowledge of cybersecurity tools and methods can do this for you. Before sharing anything with anyone, just think if it can be used against you or to harm you in any way.
