Glen de Vries, an entrepreneur and businessman who was part of Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space company’s second crew to reach space, perished in a small-plane crash in New Jersey on Thursday. He was 49 years old.

According to the New Jersey Herald, De Vries and flying instructor Thomas Fischer lost their lives when a single-engine Cessna 172 crashed near Kemah Lake.

Blue Origin tweeted, “We are devastated to hear of the sudden passing of Glen de Vries,” Blue Origin said in a statement. “He brought so much life and energy to the entire Blue Origin team and to his fellow crewmates. His passion for aviation, his charitable work, and his dedication to his craft will long be revered and admired.”  

“I’ve spent my entire career working to extend people’s lives. However, with limited materials and energy on Earth, extending our reach into space can help humanity continue to thrive.” 

de Vries said in a statement prior to the mission

De Vries’ career centered on developing software that assists in medical research. He has revolved around the development of software that aids in medical research, and he sees space as the next natural step for humanity.

“I had that heightened sense of time in my mind starting from the countdown,” de Vries said after his Blue Origin flight. “I think I’ve taken that perspective back down with me to our planet, and into my relationships. The passage of time, just like the resources on Earth, feels more precious with expanded perspective.”

Bezos’ girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez,  posted a tribute to de Vries on her Instagram.

“Such a painful loss today,” she wrote in the caption. “We got to know Glen de Vries, an incredible man, and his partner Leah last month. Leah’s love for Glen was visible every time we saw them together. When he took off for space, she gripped my hand so tight it hurt. Thinking of that moment today with a broken heart. Our deepest sympathies go out to Leah and Glen’s family, we are so saddened by the tragic news.”
