Snapchat is expanding its features! The new AR features will let you scan and identify the world around you with just your smartphone cameras.
Scan has been a part of the popular messaging app for a while as a way to identify songs or solve math problems. Thursday’s update will put the feature front and center with a button on the main page of the app while adding numerous ways that Scan can help.
The new updated “Scan” feature will be of great use. When you point your camera towards clothing, Scan can detect the style and propose something similar to add to your wardrobe. Scan will be able to detect dog breeds as well as plant and wine varieties.

Snapchat clearly believes that Scan will be a comprehensive visual search engine akin to Google Lens, and it employs augmented reality and a number of partners such as Amazon and Shazam to detect as many different forms of visual input as possible.
“We definitely think Scan will be one of the priorities for [Snapchat’s] camera going forward, long term, we see the camera doing a lot more than what it can do today.”
Eva Zhan, Snap’s head of camera product, told The Verge in an exclusive interview.

Visual search isn’t a new idea. In 2017, Google debuted Lens, allowing users to scan items through their phone camera and identify them using its vast index of search results. Lens is integrated with the Google Pixel phones and a number of other Android handsets, as well as baked into the main Google mobile app. Pinterest also has its own visual search feature called Lens that shows similar images based on what you scan in the app.

We all know how good is Snapchat when it comes to camera features and of course, hundreds of different filters. Conversation in this popular app is fun with your friends and loved ones and the popular social app is doing innovations like no other social platform.
The upcoming Snap AR spectacles will have dedicated buttons on the frame that triggers Lenses based on what the wearer is viewing. The new Spectacles aren’t available for sale. Instead Snap is giving them to select AR creators and partners who apply for access.
With snap AR Spectacles and this new scan feature, we can clearly see how Snapchat is evolving in both hardware and software to provide users something out-of-the-box stuff.
